I've tested Zoom Player, MPC (and MPC-HC) and VLC.
I use Zoom for most of the files - I just found it the most comfortable one.
MPC is handy for 1080p videos as I managed to turn on CoreAVC only in MPC.
MPC-HC is weird. I have to wait about 10 seconds until the window appears, and nother 5 to actually see the video playing. I'm sure it's my fault for not being able to set it up properly, but after a few hours trying to fix it I gave up.
I hated VLC until I saw more recent versions of it (now I just don't like it). I like extended volume bar (up to 400%) and somehow only VLC didn't lag when rendering more complex .ASS subtitles. Unfortunately, as mentioned in #6, seeking the video sucks (especially when there are linked files with ordered chapters - seekbar jumps on its own) and you can't click on the video to play/pause it. I couldn't believe that and looked at the forums. Many people asked why it isn't possible and the authors said it just won't be implemented. Ridiculous and sad at the same time.
So, Zoom Player for non-1080p and MPC with CoreAVC for 1080p. Maybe someday I'll find a way to enable CoreAVC for Zoom.

Errata: Actually the x64 version sucks. x86 seems to be OK with the newest version. x64 always did display the subtitles faster then it was supposed to, at the end of a movie, the subtitles would appear 10-15 seconds faster.

Then FPS of subtitles doesn't match with FPS of that movie. Except you're talking about time-based subs.

@johnny that's a problem at your end, MPC HC works (both x32 and x64 versions) fine on my win7 x64

The above is just tl so I dr.
But I can say one thing: for hd videos, the best solution is KMPlayer + CoreAVC. Compared to MPC + CCCP, it's faster, video quality is significantly better and subtitles are smoother (though for this one, you've got to change a few things in settings).

Why would "high quality color conversion" matter anyway with many/most home users on "value" (getting lowest quality panels from a given day) sorta-18-bit-not-really & wildly shifting with angle TN monitors? Subtitle res can be debatable, looks less misplaced when at the res of the video ;p
Also...as usual nobody remembers SMPlayer (in which the name actually tells something, it's a nicely packaged MPlayer); uber perf, uber skipping, et al.
